Biography or Teaching Philosophy

As an African American woman, born and raised in the South, I have endured many of America's cruelties and enjoyed a few of its benefits. I have lived in an era that has afforded me a view of some of America's most compelling and significant social and political developments. My experiences and observations inform my commitment to struggle for social and political equality at home and around the world.

It is my passion for equality and justice that instructs my teaching of American government and politics. For over twenty years I have encouraged students to critically assess American government and commit to improving this nation. Working together we must ensure that we all share in the greatness of America and that it serves as a shining beacon to the world.

It is my responsibility as a political scientist to tell the truth about government and politics. By carefully collecting and analyzing data using the scientific method truth is found. Students of government and politics must learn to seek the truth. While normative judgment has utility, it cannot be allowed to overshadow empiricism.

I see myself as a facilitator of learning. It is my role to guide student learning and to help students master the subject matter. My expectations are high, the demands are great, but the learning is meant to be exciting and invigorating. Students who are receptive to learning and rigorously prepare will enjoy much success and I will get the encouragement I need to continue as an activist scholar.
