Biography or Teaching Philosophy
Suzette Brimmer has been involved in the fashion industry
for over twenty-five years. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University in
Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she received her Bachelor Degree in Fashion
Merchandising. While attending LSU she began her fashion career in sales for a
prestigious retailer in the local Baton Rouge area. Ms. Brimmer has worked in
every facet of the fashion industry. Her experience spans her start in retail
sales at a prestigious department store to becoming a runway and commercial
print model for several acclaimed designers. As a runway model she participated
in both national and international fashion campaigns. She continued to immerse
herself in the fashion industry and became a buyer, fashion coordinator, and a
valuable collaborator in developing a major retailer’s private sportswear
label. Ms. Brimmer’s career experiences culminate as owner, buyer, and store
manager of Sports Productions, Inc., a career and school uniform and
promotional product store with locations in New Orleans, and Houston.
Ms. Brimmer is currently the Associate Chair of Fashion and Interior Design of the Houston Community College System where as key professor in the Fashion Merchandising Department she is responsible for the curriculum and instruction of Fashion Advertising, Commerce, Retail, and Psychology. Among her many responsibilities is her role of Faculty Advisor for several student organizations. She advises Houston Community College’s Fashion Club, an auxiliary that raises funds to support fashion events and scholarships. Ms. Brimmer also acts as state advisor and board member for the Delta Epsilon Chi Association, a national organization for college students, whose mission is to equip college students to make informed career choices by introducing them to the intricate world of marketing, business management, merchandising, and entrepreneurship. Ms. Brimmer embodies the role as mentor through her participation in such activities as conducting workshops, giving class lectures, serving as judge in competitions, and hosting field trips. She has developed workshops such as, Dress Like You Mean It, The Fine Art of Dining, and Is Pizza Finger Food?, to help prepare students entering the professional marketing and fashion industries. In acknowledgment of Ms. Brimmer’s drive to help others succeed she was awarded in May 2005, the NISOD Award for excellence in teaching and January 2007, Dr. Anthony Chee Teaching Award for excellence in teaching.
Throughout her career Ms. Brimmer has come to regard world travel as one of the best forms of education anyone can experience. Her travels allow her to teach fashion and business from a global perspective, in keeping with her idea of travel as the best way to bring her lectures to life. She persistently encourages her students to make the most of the opportunities they encounter academically, professionally, and personally, as she has done in her past and continues to do. Despite her many business, academic, and community involvements, Suzette manages to maintain a healthy personal life, in which she and her husband, Hymes Perkins, enjoy golfing, spending time with their family, and being the proud owners of two Yorkshire Terriers.
