Course Description

CSME 2515 Cosmetology Instructor 111

(2 lecture 6 lab) (128 Contact hours)

This course is a presentation of assignments and evaluation techniques for a cosmetology program. This course is a combination of lecture and lab (128 contact hours).

Course Focus:

The focus of this class is to teach the student the techniques necessary to develop teaching aids, task sheets and evaluations of student work.

Course Competencies:

This course is designed to assist the student in obtaining the following competencies:

  • a. Develop an understanding of the proper assessment and evaluation techniques in a   cosmetology program.
  • b.  Design various types of teaching aids.
  • c.  Design student task sheets.
  • d.  Design effective evaluation tools for a cosmetology course.
  • e.  Develop and field-test a skill evaluation instrument.
  • f.  Develop and field-test an information evaluation instrument.

STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS)

A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers want most in entry level employees.  These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership.

HCCS is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today's dynamic work environment.  Towards this ends, the following skills will be included in this course.  Testing and assessing these skills will vary according to the individual instructor.  The following are examples of how these skills may be incorporated into this course.

SCANS COMPETENCIES ADDRESSED IN THIS COURSE:

Through the use of the SCANS skills incorporated in this course the student will be able to:

I.USE INFORMATION SKILLS

a. Acquire relevant information pertinent to the administration of a cosmetology class.
b. Evaluate relevant information as it relates to the operation of a cosmetology lab.
c. Apply time allocation skills in developing lesson plans for specific skill attainment.

II. APPLY THINKING SKILLS

a. Display creative thinking by developing lesson plans to motivate and stimulate learner interest.
b. Exhibit decision-making skill by choosing the appropriate teaching and evaluation  methods for each individual lesson.
c. Use problem-solving skill to resolve issues that may arise during the course of a lesson or learning situation.

d. Use appropriate learning techniques to complete assigned projects.

 

III. EMPLOY INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

a. Participate as Team Member
b. Teach work-related content during student teaching phase of course.
c. Exercise work site leadership

IV. DISPLAY APPROPRIATE PERSONAL QUALITIES

a. Exhibit Responsibility for assigned work, research projects etc. in a timely manner.

b. Demonstrate Appropriate Social Skills
Performance Objectives:

  • Given the specifications and guidelines for an individual project, the student will use learning outcomes B and C. Performance will be satisfactory if the assigned instructional aid project is consistent with the guidelines given by the instructor and completed within the assigned time frame.
  • Given the guidelines for an individual project, the student will use learning outcomes D-F. Performance will be satisfactory if the assigned evaluation projects are consistent with the guidelines given by the instructor and completed within the assigned time frame.

Lab Requirements (if any)

Students are required to complete lab assignments assigned in a timely manner.

Students with Disabilities

    The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office assists students with physical, learning or emotional disabilities in developing independence and self-reliance.  Services include adaptive equipment and reasonable accommodations for admissions assistance, testing, academic advising, registration and classroom instruction.
    Students with special needs or disabilities which may affect their ability to succeed in college classes or participate in college/programs/activities, should contact the Disabilities Support Services (DDD) located at each college. Academic accommodations will be provided only after students have properly registered for services through designated disability services staff.
    The student is advised to contact the DSS Office at least 60 days prior to the beginning of the term. See additional procedures outlined in the HCCS Student Handbook.

Academic Honesty

Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student caught cheating, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the exam and will be dropped from the program. Please see the student handbook.

 

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies

Students are expected to be in attendance and on time every day. Students will be dropped from the course after 3 absences. Students arriving in class after 8:30 will not be allowed to clock in. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course. Failure to do so may result in an "F" for the semester.

 

Course Requirements and Grading Policy

Students are responsible for conducting themselves in an adult and responsible manner. Disruptions to the teaching environment will not be tolerated. Student instructors are not to fraternize with the student body, disrupt or dispute the instructor in charge at any time. Junior instructors are to dress in a professional manner and model good behavior and respect to the student body. Students must dress professionally and wear a white lab jacket and closed toes shoes with hosiery. High heels sandals or shoes with no backs are not permitted.

Testing

Examinations for this course will consist of essays, multiple choice or simulated situations, as well as situational observations by the instructors.

 

Make-up policy

Students will not be permitted to make up unit exams. Make-up for mid-term or finals will be at the discretion of the instructor. The student must take the initiative to make arrangements with the instructor no later than three (3) days after the missed exam.

Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.

Student must complete a portfolio of the following items:

  1. Evaluation instruments appropriate for each lesson plan.
  2. Task sheet for each lesson plan.

3.    Power Point presentation of a lesson
Students will be expected to participate in Service Learning Projects assigned by the instructor.

Course Content
