Course Description

CSME 2545 Instructional Theory and Clinic Operation

Course Descriptions:

(2 lecture, 6 lab)(128 contact hours)

This course is an overview of the objectives required by the Texas Cosmetology Commission Instructor Examination. This course is a combination of lecture and lab (128 contact hours).

Course Focus:

The focus of this course is to prepare the student to successfully complete the Texas Cosmetology Commission Instructor License examination. This course is the capstone experience for the Cosmetology Instructor Program.

Course Competencies:

This course is designed to assist the student if obtaining the following competencies:

a.  Exhibit the skills required for the completion of the Texas Cosmetology Commission curriculum.

b.  Demonstrate the management of a lab / clinic in a cosmetology program.

c.  Exhibit classroom management skills.

d.  Explain and demonstrate the correct procedure for completing the following TCC forms:

      • student registration form
      • student permit
      • monthly record of student hours
      • field trip forms

                   e.   Write an achievement -oriented resume and prepare an employment portfolio.

                    f. Complete a typical employment application and be prepared to complete an  

                        effective employment interview.

                  g.   Complete the practical portion of the Texas Cosmetology Commission licensing  examination within the allotted time limit.

STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS)

A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers want most in entry level employees.  These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership.

HCCS is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s dynamic work environment.  Towards this ends, the following skills will be included in this course.  Testing and assessing these skill will vary according to the individual instructor.  The following are examples of how these skills may be incorporated into this course.

SCANS COMPETENCIES ADDRESSED IN THIS COURSE:

Through the use of the SCANS skills incorporated in this course the student will be able to:

I. USE INFORMATION SKILLS

a. Acquire relevant information pertinent to the administration of a cosmetology class.
b. Evaluate relevant information as it relates to the operation of a cosmetology lab.
c. Apply time allocation skills in developing lesson plans for specific skill attainment.

II. APPLY THINKING SKILLS

a. Display creative thinking by developing lesson plans to motivate and stimulate learner interest.
b. Exhibit decision-making skill by choosing the appropriate teaching methods for each individual lesson.
c. Use problem-solving skill to resolve issues that may arise during the course of a lesson or learning situation.

                                        

III. EMPLOY INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

a. Participate as Team Member
b. Teach work-related content during student teaching phase of course.
c. Exercise work site leadership

IV. DISPLAY APPROPRIATE PERSONAL QUALITIES

a.  Exhibit Responsibility for assigned work, research projects etc. in a timely manner.

b. Demonstrate Appropriate Social Skills in relating to students, classmates and instructors
c. Display Self-Management Skills when dealing with difficult situations with students or clients.
d. Display Integrity & Honesty in evaluating coursework and student skills.

 

Performance Objectives:

    • Given the guidelines for an individual project, the student will use course learning outcome A-D. Performance will be satisfactory if the project is consistent with the guidelines provided by the TCC licensing examination handbook and completed with 100% accuracy and within the required time frame.
    • Given the guidelines for an individual project, the student will use learning outcome E-F. Performance will be satisfactory if the project is consistent with the examination guidelines, completed with 100% accuracy and within the required time frame.

Lab Requirements (if any)

Students are required to complete lab assignments assigned in a timely manner.

Students with Disabilities

    The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office assists students with physical, learning or emotional disabilities in developing independence and self-reliance.  Services include adaptive equipment and reasonable accommodations for admissions assistance, testing, academic advising, registration and classroom instruction.
    Students with special needs or disabilities which may affect their ability to succeed in college classes or participate in college/programs/activities, should contact the Disabilities Support Services (DDD) located at each college. Academic accommodations will be provided only after students have properly registered for services through designated disability services staff.
    The student is advised to contact the DSS Office at least 60 days prior to the beginning of the term. See additional procedures outlined in the HCCS Student Handbook.

Academic Honesty

Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student caught cheating, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the exam and will be dropped from the program. Please see the student handbook.

 

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies

Students are expected to be in attendance and on time every day. Students will be dropped from the course after 3 absences. Students arriving in class after 8:30 will not be allowed to clock in. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course. Failure to do so may result in an "F" for the semester.

 

Course Requirements and Grading Policy

Students are responsible for conducting themselves in an adult and responsible manner. Disruptions to the teaching environment will not be tolerated. Student instructors are not to fraternize with the student body, disrupt or dispute the instructor in charge at any time. Junior instructors are to dress in a professional manner and model good behavior and respect to the student body. Students must dress professionally and wear a white lab jacket and closed toes shoes with hosiery. High heels sandals or shoes with no backs are not permitted.

Testing

Examinations for this course will consist of multiple choice and simulated state board examination situations, as well as the practical skills examination of the state board exam. Upon completion of this course the student will have to score a minimum of 85% on mock state board exams.

 

Make-up policy

Students will not be permitted to make up unit exams. Make-up for mid-term or finals will be at the discretion of the instructor. The student must take the initiative to make arrangements with the instructor no later than three (3) days after the missed exam.

Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.

Student must complete a portfolio of the following items:

  1. Prepare a results-oriented resume.
  2. Complete at least 3 employment applications.

3.    Prepare for at least 2 employment interviews.
Students will be expected to participate in Service Learning Projects assigned by the instructor.

Course Content

Performance Objectives:

  • Given the specifications and guidelines for an individual project, the student will use learning outcomes B and C. Performance will be satisfactory if the assigned instructional aid project is consistent with the guidelines given by the instructor and completed within the assigned time frame.
  • Given the guidelines for an individual project, the student will use learning outcomes D-F. Performance will be satisfactory if the assigned evaluation projects are consistent with the guidelines given by the instructor and completed within the assigned time frame.
