Students who participate in Service Learning Orientation and projects will get 15 bonus points after completion of:
1. Essay to summarize what has been learned and how the information can be shared with at least 2 other students, community persons, friends or family members.
2. Indicate the level of analytical thinking, critical analysis and identification of trends in the issues, programs, projects or or presentations witnessed by the Service Learning participant.
3. The essay should be 300-500 words in length and should be sent to the Professor JB Giles via email.
Notice: A mathematics notebook containing all dated materials, notes, quizzes and class notes is a requirement. Regular attendance is a requirement. Frequent tardiness, leaving class early after signing in will be noted.
There will be no makeup examinations. You are encouraged to do test corrections but no additional points will be added to your test grade.
Persons missing the final examination because of international travel or other reasons MUST document this absence by email or written notice before the scheduled date of the final examination. No exceptions!

Biography or Teaching Philosophy
Prof. Jacqueline Brannon Giles uses creative teaching strategies to inspire excellence and involvement in her classroom. She lectures, and then requires students to do problem-solving or classwork. Many quizzes are administered for ongoing assessment, and 3 major exams and a final exam are a part of her evaluation of students. Sometimes she gives bonus points and enrichment activities or projects.
Prof. Giles' create short audio and video recordings of selected mathematics topics. Assignments are placed in email for student use. Video links are placed on the HCC website for easy reference, review and reinforcement.
Prof. Giles' article entitled, "So You Want to be a Teacher" was published in the newsletter of the Mathematical Association of America, FOCUS, August/September 2005 Volume 25 Number 6 on page 18.
GILES PUBLISHED IN NATIONAL JOURNAL (from HCC News, August 25, 2005)
HCC Central Professor Jacqueline Brannon Giles' article, "So You Want
to be a Teacher," is featured in the August/September issue of Focus, the
newsletter of the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) (Volume
25, No. 6, P. 18). A 16-year veteran in the Mathematics Dept., Giles
serves on the Editorial Board of the MAA, headquarted in Washington,
DC.
10. GILES REVIEWS PROOF
A review of the Miramax film, Proof, by Central College mathematics
professor Jacqueline Brannon Giles, is featured in the November issue
of FOCUS magazine (Vol. 5, No. 8), a publication of the Mathematical
Association of America. Based on David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning
play, the film is the story of a distinguished mathematics professor falling
into dementia and his equally gifted daughter. Giles' review is one of three
by mathematicians from around the country; she is a member of the
FOCUS editorial board.
