Required books:

· Textbook: Sociology (third edition) by Linda Lindsey and Stephen Beach

· Study Guide (third edition)

· Reader: Intersections: Readings in Sociology

Grade Distribution: 80% - Major Exams

20% - Comprehensive Final Examination

Materials needed for class: Two #2 lead pencils for scantron sheets

Textbook, Reader, Study Guide (Bring to class each day.)

Notebook with pockets (for handouts)

Core Competencies: In this course you will be given assignments that are designed to strengthen your skills in the following areas, as required by the Core Curriculum of Houston Community College.

· Reading (textbook, articles, ethnographies, film reviews, etc.)

· Writing (independent project, discussion questions, film/video critiques, observations, etc.)

· Speaking (oral reports, discussion, oral reading of one’s own papers, etc.)

· Listening (instructor questioning, dictation of notes, dictation of instructions, oral quizzes, etc.)

· Critical Thinking (critical analysis, wring on topics that don’t have a "right" or "wrong" answer but will be evaluated on the quality of argument and supporting evidence)

· Computer Literacy (using and evaluating websites for anthropological data, etc.)
