This course will consist of class lectures, demonstrations, open studio, critique, field trip, and clean up.  All students are expected to work as if in a collaborative studio.  Many processes require an extra set of hands or eyes, so please be generous in helping, and eager to ask for assistance.

Print I students are expected to complete at least 28 individual prints during the semester.

Print II students are expected to complete at least 3 editions during the semester.

Students are expected to leave one mutually agreeable print in the shop upon completion of the class for the collection.

ATTENDANCE:  After you miss a fourth class you have used up your absences. .  HCCS instructors may drop students after 12.5 % absence.  The college approved policy of missing 12.5% of class allows the student to be absent in illness and emergency.  Many of the processes we will cover are dangerous, involving chemicals that require special handling.

It is especially important to be in class for lectures and demonstrations.  Demonstrations will be given only once; notes should be taken and questions asked.

STUDIO MAINTENANCE:  Students who do not participate in the final studio clean up will receive the grade of I, (incomplete), until they have contributed.

Printmaking involves large, clean sheets of expensive papers.  It also involves inky fingers and tools.  It is imperative to keep clean areas clean and inking only in the work areas.

Always clean up after yourself.  Midsemester clean ups will be scheduled as required.

MATERIALS:  Students are responsible for providing their own personal tools, papers, solvents, and printing elements (wood, plates, etc.)

The shop provides most solvents, inks, and equipment.

The shop is always in need of clean, soft rags, telephone books, old toothbrushes, tissue paper scraps, and good jokes.

SAFETY:  This class can be dangerous.  When in doubt...ask.  Your notebook helps, in case you work outside of class and a second opinion is not available.

If you are pregnant, nursing, trying to conceive, or have any type of respiratory disease, please talk to me before continuing in the class.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by HCCS policy.  Refer to your student handbook.

STUDENT SHOW:

All students are required to enter a work in the student exhibition.

Failing to do so will affect your class participation grade.

LOCKERS:

All students will be assigned a locker.

ROOM KEYS AND OPEN STUDIO:

To enter a locked studio, you need to present your key card to the fine arts office (FAC 101) and sign out the key.  Please return the key immediately after unlocking the room.  Do not go home with the key.

Like all college courses, work outside class time will be necessary.  Students are expected to work assignments and editions out of class.  You'll find the printmaking studio available at these times:

            MTWR:                       8 am-10 pm

            FS:                              8 am-4pm

DISABILITIES:

Students who require reasonable accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to report to Room 102 SJAC, or call (713) 718-6164 to make necessary arrangements.  Faculty are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.

CORE INTELLECTUAL COMPETENCIES:

This course addresses the following core intellectual competencies:  reading, writing, listening, speaking, critical thinking, and computer literacy.

SKETCHBOOK:

Sketchbooks are a valuable tool in the art-making process.  They are a portable and inexpensive way to log ideas and work through problems.  You will be required to keep notes from this class and notes on visiting museums and/or galleries.  Your sketchbook is an art journal for you, by you.  Use it to record ideas, thoughts, writing about art, books, movies, etc.  You will be expected to fill at least 60 pages total in your sketchbook.  Your sketchbook will be evaluated at midterm and for the final.  Bring your sketchbook to class everyday.

Merely going through the motions, that is, whipping out a few sketches, is not acceptable.  The point of a sketchbook is to think about images and that means think on paper.

CELLPHONES AND WALKMANS:

Please turn your cellphones off before class and put your pagers on vibrate.  Not only are they rude, but a sudden ringing has often ruined a delicate line being painted.

Walkmans are not allowed
