Course description:
Arts 1311 is a beginning studio course which studies the visual language: line, shape, texture, value, color, composition, balance, rhythm, unity, etc. This "language" is essential to all the fine and applied arts, architecture, and design areas -- from painting to fashion to pottery to interior and landscape design. Understanding good design is essential to the further study of any visual art.
Students will complete projects solving problems that explore the principles and elements of design. A variety of materials and processes will be experienced.
Class time will include lectures, project work, demonstrations, exercises, slides, problem solving, field trips, and critiques.
Grades
Your individual projects will be graded according to a range of criteria:
participation/critique
idea development/process/progress
performance in class
presentation/completeness
originality/quality
technical skills
Individual in-progress evaluation will be done as the works develop. Group critiques and discussions will give you a chance to get feedback from classmates. Participating in group critiques is required.
Make up work can be done on any project at any time. Only the better of the two grades will count. Make up pieces should be brought to the next scheduled critique.

Academic dishonesty:
Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by HCCS.
Student Show
All students are required to enter a work in the student exhibition.
Failing to do so will affect your class participation grade.
Attendance
HCC policy states that students who miss more than 12.5% of class time may be dropped from the class. In this class, a W may result if you have more than 12 hours of absence. Please speak to me if you have special circumstances that are affecting your attendance.
Tardiness
Since demonstrations and instructions are often given at the start of class, lateness can mean losing valuable information. For this reason, please arrive promptly. If you come in late or have to leave early, please let me know right away
