Course description:

Painting I is a studio course that provides students with a solid foundation of painting techniques.  A working knowledge of gesso, mediums, paint, tools, and a variety of supports will be examined.  The fabrication of stretchers, canvas stretching, and canvas priming will take place.  Using appropriate terminology, students of Painting I will learn to discuss their work, as well as that of their peers.  A variety of subjects will be explored.

Throughout this course there will be scheduled and impromptu demonstrations, discussions, lectures, slide presentations, and field trips.

Academic dishonesty:

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by HCCS policy.  Refer to your student handbook.

Student Show

All students are required to enter a work in the student exhibition.

Failing to do so will affect your class participation grade.

Attendance

HCC policy states that students who miss more than 12.5% of class time may be dropped from the class.  In this class, a W may result if you have more than 12 hours of absence.  Please speak to me if you have special circumstances that are affecting your attendance.

Tardiness

Since demonstrations and instructions are often given at the start of class, lateness can mean losing valuable information.  For this reason, please arrive promptly.  If you come in late or have to leave early please let me know right away

Studio policies

1.  No food or drink in the painting studios. (bottled water o.k.)

2.  No children in the studios.

3.  Students are required to participate in the end of semester clean-up, as well as daily clean up of personal space.

4.  Please wear appropriate work clothes to class.

5.  Return to the supply closet anything you have borrowed.

6.  Do not use sculpture studio power tools until you have received instructions.

7.  Properly care for HCCS tools and equipment.

Lockers:

All students will be assigned a locker.

Room keys and open studio:

Like all college courses, work outside class time will be necessary.

To enter a locked studio, you need to present your key card to the fine arts office (FAC 101) and sign out the key.  Please return the key.

You'll find the painting studio available at these times:

            MW:                8 am-10 pm

            TR:                  8 am-6 pm

            F:                     8 am-4 pm

We share the studio with a class that meets on TR 6-10 and Sat. 9-3.  If you must do something in the room during that time, please introduce yourself to the other instructor.

Disabilities:

Students who require reasonable accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to report to Room 102 SJAC, or call (713) 718-6164 to make necessary arrangements.  Faculty are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.

Cellphones and walkmans:

Please turn your cellphones off before class and put your pagers on vibrate.  Not only are they rude, but a sudden ringing has often ruined a delicate line being painted.

Walkmans are not allowed during classtime.

Sketchbooks:

Sketchbooks are a valuable tool in the art-making process.  They are a portable and inexpensive way to log ideas and work through problems.  You will be required to keep notes from this class and notes on visiting museums and/or galleries.  Your sketchbook is an art journal for you, by you.  Use it to record ideas, thoughts, writing about art, books, movies, etc.  You will be expected to fill at least 60 pages total in your sketchbook.  Your sketchbook will be evaluated at midterm and for the final.  Bring your sketchbook to class everyday.

Core Intellectual Competencies:

This course addresses the following core intellectual competencies:  reading, writing, listening, speaking, critical thinking, and computer literacy.

It is recommended that HCCS students carry health and/or medical insurance when enrolled in Fine Arts classes.
