PAINTING SUPPLIES

Michael Golden

office:  713-718-6586

Bring assigned supplies to class.

Supports:

prestretched canvas, 24 x 30 minimum for Painting I first class

pad of heavy-duty watercolor paper, 18 x 24 minimum.

Wood, canvas, hardware, and animal glue will be provided for one project.

For the other paintings, you may either make your own canvases, purchase prepared stretchers, or construct other types of supports.  This option will be discussed in class.

Gesso is used to prime the canvas or paper or any surface you choose to work on.  Buy this in a large quantity.  It’s cheaper by the gallon, and one gallon can be shared by two  students.

Paint:

All paints are acrylic, NOT OILS.

The selection of a palette is largely a matter of personal preference, but often the initial temptation is to buy too many tubes.  It is better to begin with a limited range of colors, adding to these gradually as your needs arise from experience.  A broad spectrum of hues can be mixed from the colors shown here.

titanium white (at least a 4 oz. tube)

mars black(at least a 4 oz. tube)

cadmium red (medium)

alizaron crimson

cadmium yellow

lemon yellow

ultramarine blue

pthalocyanine blue

and if you can afford two more…

yellow ochre

burnt umber

Daler-Rowney makes a starter set, but you will need to add a tube of pthalo blue.

if you can afford more:

permanent green or veridian green, dioxazine purple, cerulean blue, burnt sienna

Utrecht, Daler-Rowney's System-3 , Liquitex, and Golden brands are perfect for this class.

Liquitex Basics are inexpensive but contain less pigment.
