Course Description: College Reading I is designed to address the developmental reader’s need for direct instruction in basic reading behaviors that are essential to the acquisition of knowledge in the content areas. Instruction is based on an interactive reading method with emphasis on learning to learn. These key skills include previewing chapters, selecting and organizing the information read, and reading critically while, making informed decisions about that information. Credit 3 (3 lecture, 1 lab)
Textbook: Adams, W. Royce and Becky Patterson. Developing Reading Versatility. Eighth Edition. Fort Worth: Harcourt, 2001.
Note: You must purchase a new textbook: no used textbooks will be allowed. Your instructor will verify that you have done this.
Materials: At least eight Scantron answer sheets (available in the bookstore), paper, pens, dictionary, spiral notebook and/or folder (for class notes, assignments, and handouts)

Chapter 1 “Developing Vocabulary Skills:” Parts A - D (“Learning New Words,” “Learning Words In Context,” “Learning Word Parts and Structure” and “Putting it All Together”) pg. 5-55
Chapter 2 “Developing Literal Recall:” Parts A - D (“Separating the Main Idea from Details,” “Reading for the Main Idea: Paragraph Patterns,” “Finding an Author’s Thesis,” and “Summarizing as a Way to Test Your Understanding”) pg. 56-103

TASP preparation exercises.

NOTE: If you have been working on TASP exercises instead of Chapters 7 & 8, your instructor will explain what to study for Major Test #3), or he or she may choose to omit Major Test #3.
