Math 0306__27982 Fundamentals of Mathematics I
Course Description:
Fundamentals of Mathematics I. Topics include fundamental operations in whole numbers, fractions and decimals,
percents, ratios, proportions, descriptive statistics, and an introduction to the real numbers. All students who
enroll in this course are expected to complete MATH 0308 and MATH 0312 in the following consecutive semesters before
attempting their first college-level mathematics course (usually MATH 1314 College Algebra). A comprehensive Departmental
Final Exam will be given in this course.
Course Intent:
This course provides students with the basic arithmetical skills enabling them to proceed to the next level
mathematics course. It is also designed to strengthen many of the skills that an individual must demonstrate or master in
order to achieve college readiness. It is also intended for those students who are reasonably adept at performing the simple
mathematical operations needed in every day affairs, but become quite confused when confronted with the same operations in the
context of a mathematics class.
Prerequisite:Students with one of the followings grades.
1.SAT: Less than 450
2.ASSET: Scaled Score: Less than 41
3.COMPASS: Scaled Score: Less than 49
4.ACCUPLACER: Scaled Score: Less than 49

6. add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimals and percent.
7. simplify algebraic expressions.
8. solve problems involving ratio and proportion.
Course Policies
Daily attendance will be taken. Students are encouraged to attend the classes regularly. You should not miss a class unless it is beyond your control. Students are responsible for the class notes and the announcements (absence is not an excuse). You will be subjected to administrative withdrawal of the course for excessive absences (Must be less than or equal to 12.5%. See the student hand book). That is the student will be dropped from the course after 6 hours of absences.
2. Classroom Maintenance
Please try your best to keep the classroom clean. After your class move chairs up to the tables/keep the desk in orderly manner, and remove any papers from the table or chair. Do not write on the tables.
3. Classroom Discipline
All students are treated as adults and will be responsible for their actions. Kindly observe the following rules for proper progress of the class.
1. Please respect your neighbor's right to learn in a quite atmosphere. Kindly refrain from all unwanted chattering random irrelevant comments. You should actively participate the lesson by taking notes and asking questions to clarify doubts.

3. Please DO NOT leave the classroom early. You are responsible for all the announcements I make in the class. If you have some reason to leave early, please do it as quickly and discretely as possible, but do not forget to inform me in advance.
4. Cell Phone:Turn off or keep it on vibrator during the class time. No student can answer cell phone within the classroom. If your cell phone rings and / or answer the phone during the class time it is considered as tardy. Each tardy will cost you 5 point at next exam. If your cell phone vibrates you may answer it out side the classroom. But remember walk out as quietly and discreetly as possible.
4. Students with Disabilities:
Any student with documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, visual, hearing, etc.)who needs to arrange reasonable accommodation must contact the disability service office at their respective college at the beginning of each semester. The faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodation requested by the Disability Support services office. (See the student handbook.)
5. Homework:
The course is incorporated with MayMathlab. The students are supposed to complete the homework and chapter test assignments for each chapter. The avarage of this work will be eqial to one test. In addition to the MyMathlab work you will be assigned practic problems from each chapter unit.
6.Resource Materials:
The student textbook is supplemented by MayMathlab. Students are supposed to access to review problems, work interactive exercises, view video presentations related to specific topics and use the tutoring components. Any students enrolled in Math 0306 at HCC has the access to Learning Resource Center(LRC) where they my get additional help in understanding the theory or in improving their skills. The LRC is staff with mathematics faculty and student assistants, and offers tutorial help, videotapes and computer assisted drills. Also available is a student solution manual that may be purchased from the bookstore.
7. Examinations:
There will be 3 in-class tests and a comprehensive final examination. Each in-class test will be given as two parts based on two different chapters. There will be 6 chapter tests. The last in-class will be based on chapter 6 and 7. All students must take the final examination in order to pass the course. No calculators are to be used on graded course work and in particular all examinations.
8. Academic Honesty:
Any kind of attempt to cheat during an examination will result in the immediate seizure of the examination paper and an automatic zero on the examination. Any talking, attempting to see neighbor's work, referring to notes or books, during an examination will be considered as cheating. It can results dismissal from entire HCC system.(See student handbook)
9.INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: Receiving a W in a course may affect the status of your student Visa. Once a W is given for the course, it will not be changed to an F because of the visa consideration. Please contact the International Student Office at 713-718-8520 if you have any questions about your visa status and other transfer issues.
10. NOTICE: Students who repeat a course for a third or more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor / counselor about opportunities for tutoring / other assistance prior to considering course withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing grades.
11. Make-up Examinations:
There will be no make-up exams for any reason. If you missed an exam due to valid reason such as illness attested by an attending physician, the final exam grade will be given to the exam you missed. Such a request has to be informed me by a written statement. Otherwise zero will be given to the exam you missed.
12. Grading Policy:
A student who take the final examination will receive, based on the course average A(100-90), B(89-80), C(79-70), F(60-0). The course average is computed as follows.
Course Average = [(0.2)Test(1)+(0.2)Test+(0.2)Test(3)+(0.25)Final+0.15(Mymath asignment)]
