Textbook: Prealgebra and Introductory Algebra

Authors:    Bittinger & Ellenbogen

Catalog Description:  Topics include fundamental operations in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, proportions, descriptive statistics, and an introduction to the real numbers.  All students who enroll in this course are expected to complete MATH 0308 and MATH 0312 in the following consecutive semesters before their first college-level mathematics course College Algebra (MATH 1314). A comprehensive Departmental Final will be given with this course.

Course Intent:  This course provides students with the basic arithmetical skills enabling them to proceed to the next level mathematics course. It is also designed to strengthen many of the skills that an individual must demonstrate or master in order to pass the mandatory TASP test.

Classroom Policies: You are allowed 4 unexcused absences. After the fourth absence, you can/will be dropped. The use of cell phones is prohibited during class. Please turn your phone off or put on vibrate and quietly leave the room to take your call if necessary.

November 11:  Last Day to withdraw from class

November 25 –28: Thanksgiving Break

Grading:  A math notebook is highly recommended as a reference book for the student. Notebooks will be checked periodically. A notebook grade will be given. Quizzes will also be given periodically. There are no makeup quizzes. The student is required to do the chapter tests for all seven chapters on the computer through MyMathLab. The notebook grade, quizzes and chapter tests will be added and the total points will equal another test grade.  There will be 4 in-class examinations and a comprehensive departmental final examination. If a person fails an exam, they will be required to do makeup work before retaking the exam. The highest grade you can make on the retake is a 90. If an exam is missed, the final examination grade will be doubled. Calculators are not allowed on quizzes or examinations.  Anyone caught cheating will receive a zero for that exam and is subject to suspension.
