CONSTRUCTION UPDATE October 2007 CENTRAL PLANT – The Central Plant is 96% complete. The substantial completion date is tentatively November, 2007. Upon completion, the chilled water system will be initially connected to the Heinen Theatre, Theatre One and the Fine Arts Center. Second, the Whiteley Building and the Educational Development Center will be connected. Finally, the Learning Hub/Science Building will be connected tentatively in December, 2007. LEARNING HUB/SCIENCE BUILDING – The Learning Hub and Science Building is 63% complete. The installation of an electrical duct bank on Austin Street (to provide power to the Learning Hub) was delayed, but is scheduled to begin this week. The sidewalk on the west side of Austin Street (near the San Jacinto and Whiteley Buildings will be temporarily closed beginning Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Appropriate signage will be posted. The crane demobilization is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2007. The west wing parking lot will be temporarily closed the morning of the demobilization. All employees, students and visitors are requested to utilize alternate parking lots during this period of time. Upon completion of the building, the remaining east wing portion of the construction site in front of the San Jacinto Building will be converted to green space. The west wing parking lot will be restored to normal use. ADDITIONAL STUDENT PARKING LOT – The leased property located on Labranch and Winbern is now available for student parking. Signage (indicating HCC Student Parking) will be installed soon. EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER – The newly renovated second floor restrooms are now in service. The renovation was required to utilize the additional second floor classrooms. The use of the classrooms is pending the connection to the chilled water system of new central plant. The tentative date that the classrooms will be available for use is the Spring Semester, 2008. SJAC NATURAL GAS SERVICE – The issue is in the progress of being resolved. A leak test is pending and various shut off valves (internal – in the biology labs and external – outside of the building) will be replaced. The work will be completed after hours as needed and is tentatively scheduled to be completed by Monday evening, October 15, 2007.

“Building a Better Education”

In 2003, HCC successfully passed a $150.8 million bond issue to begin a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for facility construction and renovation. Central College will soon begin the various phases of the CIP. Considering the challenges and rewards of Central’s growth, the College Transition Team (CTT) will continue providing updates to faculty, staff, students, and the community. Vehicles used to provide updates will include but are not limited to the CTT website (http://learning.cc.hccs.edu/future/), plasma displays, e-mail, brochures, signs, bookmarks, flyers, banners, podcasts, and informational seminars.

Central Plant Construction (Austin @ Alabama)
Parking at this lot and the SIS building will soon be re-routed to the lot on Caroline between Truxillo and Isabella.
The small parking lot behind the Armory on San Jacinto will be used for contractors.
Pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Austin between Alabama and Holman will soon be re-routed. The Austin Street drop-off will be re-located to the San Jacinto Street drop-off.

East and West Wings
East Wing demolition is scheduled for October, subsequent construction for November 2006.
The bookstore will be re-located to the West Wing by August 2006.
Parking for both wings will be re-routed to the garage, as the West Wing lot will be used for staging and the East Wing for construction.

Education Development Center (EDC)
Renovation of the second floor is tentatively scheduled for July 2006.
The Caroline @ Francis parking lot will be used for construction staging.
Faculty and staff parking will be re-routed to the Austin @ Francis lot.

HISD International High School (LaBranch @ Winbern)
The International HS is tentatively scheduled to open this Fall with 100 students
Temporary buildings will be placed on the property
Parking for the lots located within LaBranch, Crawford (Almeda), Holman, and Winbern will be re-routed to the garage.

* Metro bus stop will remain on Holman @ Austin
** Dates are subject to change

EDC Construction Update

The renovations of the EDC second floor will begin tomorrow with the demolition process. The Caroline @ Francis parking lot will be utilized as a construction site and will not be available beginning Monday, July 24 thru August 15, 2006. The alley on the north side of the building will also be utilized for the construction crew and will not be available for normal use.

Alternate parking is available on the Austin Street side of the EDC Building.
